From the earliest hunter-gatherers to the complex tribal clans that still exist in parts of the world today, one can observe evidence of people deeply involved in the maintenance of a beneficent relationship with Animal Spirits. Essential to this is the intervention of the shaman, or medicine man, who acts as the intermediary between the physical world and the mysterious universe of the supernatural. This shaman from the Sioux tribe derives his powerful medicine from Elk, which is the most sexually potent symbol in Sioux imagery; but he is supported by different animal helpers which are represented by coyote and ferret skins, hawk feathers, and many claws and herbs wrapped around his medicine hoop. A mask of softened elk hide silences his worldly self (shamans literally cannot speak when masked) so that the animal's essence emerges during the rituals.
This costume - of an Elk Dreamer - was particularly fascinating to me because it strongly resembles the paintings of shamans found in the ancient rock paintings in Europe - confirming further the universality of the desire and attempt to achieve a spiritual connection with Animal Spirits.

Perhaps rising after a night spent camping under the stars or taking a break between ranch chores, this woman pauses to enjoy a hot cup of coffee with her canine companion. There is an especially strong bond that is developed when an animal becomes a working partner that goes beyond the pet/owner relationship; the affection and respect is deepened.
This cowgirl is almost unconscious in her easy affection for her dog, but her thoughts go beyond that immediate relationship. Her gaze encompasses the entire vista of her world, and it fills her with clarity and deep satisfaction for the place she is now in, both physically and mentally, the place her life choices have led her.

A custom practiced by some Plains Indian tribes was fashioning a leather wrapped circle and tying string through its middle in the pattern of a spider web. An opening was left in the center of the web to which was attached various good luck charms. Fastening the talisman to the head of a cradleboard allowed the child’s good dreams to pass through the web’s hole, trapping the malevolent forces in the web.
The Apache woman has traded for the talisman – called a Dreamcatcher – and views it in wonder and hope for her young child’s future . . .determined to give the child every advantage – using magic and mysticism to insure the child’s well being.

This sculpture is of a rancher who has come across a maverick cow (one that has not been branded) while out riding the range. He has his saddle branding iron, that had been tied to his horse’s saddle, and is trying to start a fire to brand the cow he has just roped and tied. The raindrop brimming from his hat, his slicker billowing around him as he tries to shelter the struggling flame, imply that the weather is blustery with drizzling rain…..not very conducive to getting his job done.
Evident in “Branding Fire” is Star’s affinity for the quiet, contemplative moments that are as much a part of life in the West as the more action packed dramatic incidents that occur. Her attention to accurate detail brings an authenticity to her work: like the saddle iron, which must be small, light and transportable on horseback over many miles of rough riding, as well as the feeling communicated by subtle gesture and facial expression that is particular to the moment, and at the same time universal.
“Though not by vocation, my father was a very talented woodworker, and spent much of his free time working on wood projects in our home basement. He would let me join him there as a young child, giving me a pine board on which to draw, then let me cut out the image using the jigsaw. Then I could file down the edges, shaping the figures into sculpture, and paint them. He had such patience and tenacity with whatever job he took on, not daunted by difficulties that might arise. This was, I believe, as influential as learning to use my hands to make objects……to not be discouraged by challenges, but to take them on with determination and alacrity.
“As I started this idea for a sculpture of a cowboy in this type of situation, I realized after working some time on it, that what drew me to the concept was the subconscious desire to portray this attribute. I wished to convey the satisfaction of getting a job done despite adverse conditions, finding reward and peace of mind from his chosen work, no matter the difficulties. He was the perfect role model for it, which all came clear to me after the face emerged……..I had sculpted my father’s face.”

In some tribes particularly the Navajo, pollen is used for blessing the most simple act, person or place, as well as in the most elaborate ceremonies. The power of the pollen is considered greatly enhanced by dusting the wings of an eagle or hawk, captured for such purposes. The bird, placed over a buckskin, will shake off the pollen, which is then carefully gathered from the buckskin, and kept in a pollen pouch for future use in blessings and prayers.

Since the very origins of human consciousness, there is evidence that humans understood the concept of future, and sought to influence it to improve their chances of survival. Using animal helping spirits to carry prayers and messages to the highest power is a practice found in every culture throughout time. The intervention of holy men/shamans/medicine men to enhance spiritual connection is a tradition practiced by cultures worldwide as a very sacred ritual. Summoning these spirits in times of crisis (whether in healing, hunting, battle, etc.) to carry prayers to the highest deity was seen as a matter of life and death.
I chose to create a holy man based on what I have been most familiar…..a Native American from my own continent. The Oglala Sioux medicine men were the subjects of several historical books about Black Elk and Crazy Horse that influenced me decades ago, so I selected this tribe.
This seemed like the right sculpture to express my feelings about the significance of seers and wisdom keepers through my art. To me, in an era when we are facing global environmental concerns and are not so in tune with the natural world, it is prudent to recall how mankind has traditionally handled overwhelming challenges.
In this sculpture, this holy man is in a prayer trance, using chanting, drumming, and wafting the smoke of burning sage over himself, by using his eagle prayer fan, in order to reach the state of consciousness that puts him in touch with helping spirits. In this altered state, he can appeal to these helpers and divine powers for aid in facing troubled times.

In the desert, as in the mountains, the weather can be violently unpredictable. Storms can explode out of a serene blue sky in a matter of moments. For this reason, Native People, who spent most of their time out-of-doors, were acutely attuned to the warning signs. Drawing on these facts of nature, Star York has imagined a dramatic vignette of turn-of-the-century Apache life. A young mother out gathering berries with her child has heard the drums of distant thunder. Pursued by a lashing wind and bolts of lightning, she hurries toward shelter.
As with all of Star's work, the historical detail is finely researched. The "burden basket" the woman carries over her shoulder is specific to western tribes and is given to young girls at their puberty ceremonies. Note the jewelry the woman is wearing: in addition to the cross, silver-dollar medallion, and glass trade bead necklace, around her neck dangles a wood amulet carved by a medicine man out of lightning-struck wood that is believed to be an entrail of the Wind God.
But the detail does not exist for detail's sake - it is integrated into the sculpture in ways that subtly support the original concept. The way the woman is dressed is an example. Rather than putting her in traditional clothes, Star has her wearing the kind of long and loose cotton dress Western Apache women adopted after contact with Europeans. This allows Star to bring more movement to the piece, accenting the woman's flight and the swirling wind, which in turn adds drama and urgency to the action.
Finally, look closely at the baby. Intuitively he appears to have recognized his mother's alarm. He seems to know danger is chasing them. And we realize this not only by the wild-eyed expression registered on his face, but by the suggestion that he too has acted in rescuing his doll.
In this exciting new work, Star continues her interest in sculpting Indian women and placing them in contexts that allow them to demonstrate strength and character. Though concern is etched in this young Apache mother's brow, she acts swiftly and competently to stay ahead of trouble.

With this body of work, I wanted to expand on the series I began years ago of sculpturally recreating ancient drawings, paintings and petroglyphs. These works include artifact influences from cultures worldwide and from different periods of time, because they show how pervasive and consistent this practice was from all corners of the globe.
These animals taken from a variety of historical artifacts, are sculpted to reference their origin, but to have them to appear to be coming alive, animated from the dormant stance they have been in for centuries….answering a kind of summoning. Hearing the call from the shaman, they are beginning to move.

The creation of fetishes, effigies, and talismans goes back to the earliest evidence of mankind. The compulsion to make aesthetic objects displays the creative spark that distinguished Homo sapiens from Neanderthals; it is a unique providence of the human mind. First expressed in stone carvings and cave wall paintings from the Paleolithic Period, it has continued throughout the centuries and across all cultures. When mankind is in tune with the natural environment, he is acutely aware of the strengths inherent in other species in order to learn useful survival skills . . . such as the bear for finding healing herbs, the coyote for clever prowess, the deer for evasive tactics. By creating their likeness, the recreation becomes the physical embodiment for the particular characteristic the animal symbolizes for the maker. And, as every creature has it’s unique qualities, so have other elements such as stone, feather and bone, which when added to the fetish increases its significance. The object then has become the recipient vessel of the energy given it, spiritual liaison for the bearer, containing the energy. This magic spark can then be called upon when needed, whether it be courage, fortitude, clarity in vision or healing powers. As an extension of this most primal understanding that goes back to the very roots of our being, I feel that all objects of art contain an energy endowed by it’s maker. It is this very mystery I wished to explore in this body of work, and encourage viewers to contemplate. It is partly influenced by those contemporary artists who have reminded me of these mysterious corners of my mind, but mostly by the ancients whose brilliance fascinates and inspires me above all, and on whose shoulders we all stand.

The very first foal born on our ranch grew up to have her own foal, and their interaction is what inspired this sculpture. She was a particularly affectionate mother, and the tenderness she expressed in this moment was what I wished to capture in bronze.

These bobcat kitten siblings have been alerted to something suspicious that has grabbed their attention from their play. Each little face and body posture reflects a different way of responding to whatever this scary thing might be. One is alerted and curious…. ready to investigate. The crouching one is more wary, and is starting to assume an attack/defend stance. The third is shy but interested, expecting something that might be fun. Each responds according to their individual personality, which, in my observations, varies as much in animals as in human beings.

The idea came from some clients of mine who had built a waterfall and pond in their back yard. Their home backed up against a rocky, mountainous area of the National Forest near Tucson, so their pond hosted a variety of wild life. Being an avid photographer, the husband set up a camera and tripod to capture the visiting creatures. They were delighted to see a bobcat that soon became a regular. I came to know the couple because they decided to purchase a life size bronze of a bobcat I sculpted called "Perfect Lazy Day" to set out near the waterfall. After installing it, the bobcat responded to the bronze in a surprising way. It would bask in the sun next to it, even reflecting it's exact pose. Jim was so pleased to get a photo of this, and sent it to me.
Before long their bobcat friend turned up with a brood of three kittens. The couple were charmed to watch the babies following their mom to the water, and playing over the rocks surrounding the pond on almost a daily basis. Jim sent me more photos, but the one that struck me was when, early on when the kittens first warily started coming, they all heard something that startled them enough to run to mom for security. I loved the tangle of paws, the bright, curious little faces, and the protective stare of the mama.

One of the sculptures of my mountain lion series, I wanted to show in this sculpture, a little different expression of a big cat watching over her territory, of which lions are most protective.
Unlike her male counterpart, who expresses a fierce but total relaxed confidence in the overseeing of his domain, she shows a wary but alert eye to noting any possible interlopers, and has a reserved confidence as she assays her surroundings.

Wetlands provide a most abundant food source for so many different species, making it a major draw to creatures of the arid Southwest. Those specifically evolved to wetlands living can only be found there, like the Kingfisher in New Mexico.

Owls have always drawn my curiosity and attention. They are like children of the forest…. big-eyed, they seem to have the wide-eyed innocence of a child, yet their ability to mysteriously swivel their heads while sitting so still, makes them seem all-seeing. Every indigenous culture has some symbolism attached to these birds. In the Southwest, the owl is associated with one’s own soul in the Hispanic culture, and various Native American cultures see them as important liaisons to the spirit world.
In Greek mythology, the owl sat on Athena’s blind side, enabling her to see whole truths. So Owls represented knowledge, feminine intuition, and seeing beyond deceit, masks, and the superficial.

No other bird has symbolized mystery and magic as much as the owl, with perceptions that widely vary from culture to culture among the ancients. But the concepts of wisdom, vision in dark places, and intuition of hidden motives are consistently present in connection with owl lore.
Example: an owl rested on the shoulder of Athena in Ancient Athens to guide her in justice, and alert her to the approach of disguised enemies. Owl’s perceived clairvoyance and acute vision gives them the ability to see thru masks, in order to wisely discern true intentions.
In some cultures of the Southwest, owls were associated with the soul, especially for women. Owls are aligned with moon magic, from which they get their great healing power, especially of the heart and soul. This shows us the way to connect with those deep inner parts of ourselves to discover our true heart-path in life.
Pairing with the moonstone, the owl energy is magnified. Moonstone cleanses away negativity, cultivates empathy and compassion, aids balance with the rhythms of Nature, and re-energizes mind and body.

This sculpture is one of a series on bears. I especially enjoyed doing this series because of the subtle humor I can play with in their expressions.
I was able to study this first hand when I visited a wild life refuge that kept their large animals, like the bears, cougars, and buffalo, in 15 acre paddocks and created environments as close to natural for them. They allow cars to drive thru on tracks, so one can sit and study the wild life with out interfering with them.
I was very entertained watching the bears, who very much enjoyed entertaining themselves! Playful as puppies, while doing their usual scavenging for food tidbits.
In every bear paddock, ravens and crows flew in to join the fun, teasing and pestering the bears, purely for the fun of it! This is a behavior very familiar to me since ravens do the same thing with my dogs at home.
“Grin and Bear It” has an expression I have seen on my own dogs when finally getting annoyed with the chattering ravens, but still trying to be tolerant of their bird playpals.

There is a wild animal refuge near the Grand Canyon in Arizona that I visited to study bears. I choose this venue since I knew the bears in their keeping lived in 14 acre paddocks where they could live and play much as they would in the wild. This offered the opportunity to watch them from my car as the bears milled around going about their business. I was interested to see how much they interacted and played with others in their paddocks, though I was delighted to witness how much they teased, and were teased by ravens.
These birds were free to come in go as they pleased….not at all contained in the paddocks. Yet they seemed a constant presence among the bears, who seemed to enjoy hunting around for food and playing at different things together, surprisingly more with the ravens than even with each other.
I saw a similar interaction going on at home. I live and work on our horse ranch near Abiquiu, NM. Since we are on the river Chama, and have irrigation, lots of wildlife frequent our land …..from coyotes, bears and cougars, to cranes, hawks, geese and ravens.
Ravens are the most common, sometimes having what seems to be conventions that stay at our ranch for weeks at a time.
But the local ravens that remain year ‘round do like to interact with us and our dogs. Many funny altercations go on that seem to be instigated by ravens just looking to entertain themselves….like dropping rocks on one of the dogs from a high branch to get a reaction!
So watching them with the bears struck a cord for me. It has always felt it remarkable when I see how much personality individual animals display, even wildlife!
To capture this in bronze was the inspiration for this sculpture."

This is a tribute to my little and longtime companion, Frida. She had been a rescue when she came into our lives at 3 months old and was different from the usual Jack Russell terrier from the start. Surprisingly quiet and composed, she loved cuddling and was determined to go everywhere with me, even if it meant chasing all day after the horse I was riding. She had a big personality in that little body and a big heart. She was an amazing huntress, attacking with ferocity any snake she ever came across, and becoming over-the-top excited whenever I took out a gun for target practice.

Friends of mine had invited me to a party they were having, and upon being greeted at the door, the host asked me if I wanted to see their fat cat. Seemed a particularly odd question so I did, of course, say yes. I was led to a room where the cat was kept while the party was on, and Jeb certainly was a surprise. He looked like a basketball with head, tail and legs. He was so unusual, I decided I wanted to sculpt him, but in the process found that I didn’t want to make him quite as round as he actually was because it looked too implausible! The sculpture I created turned out not quite as round as Jeb had been, but close enough!

We have many large Jackrabbits that share our property here, and being the size they are, even my dogs can be a bit wary of chasing them. They have a surprising confidence, considering that they are prey animals, so it’s especially interesting observing them.
Deciding on sculpting a jack rabbit munching on a carrot allowed me the opportunity to show this confidence and add a bit of subtle humor, referencing the cartoon rabbit with his famous line, “What’s up Doc?”

There is a large orchard on our ranch that draws much wildlife when baring fruit….coyotes, skunks, birds, badgers and raccoons.
The raccoons can climb so they have no worry about our 3 ranch dogs. They can happily feast on the abundance, and as a result, they are quite well fed and chunky!

The birth of a white buffalo is so rare that it is a great event, and portends grand blessings to come.
This sculpture of the rare white buffalo is named after the best known white buffalo our country has known. “Big Medicine” was born in 1933 on a Montana Indian reservation and grew to remarkable proportions. He was 6’ at his hump and 12 feet long from nose to tail.
