The Love between the Mare and her Colt is essential to the colt’s well being.
It is imperative that the colt runs along side of his mother learning to run and coordinate along with the subtle twists and turns of a gentle gallop.

This creates an unbreakable bond in which a colt is matured to the eventual status of an independent stallion.

In this series, I've tried to focus on individual personalities that I believe can be glimpsed best in moments of relaxed repose. Most often humans today experience wildlife at a distance and on the move. Animals, whether domesticated or wild, have a character as individual as humans and sometimes reflect this character in their facial or body expressions. The capturing of a telltale gesture or glance is what I find rewarding in these works.

The horses depicted on the ceremonial caves of Paleolithic man suggest fertility and abundance, whereas the horse in Renaissance art, once equines were developed into tools for battle, became strongly male.

Once I began to consciously consider the horse as I have rendered it in my own work, I realized that I have mostly focused on the female side . . . (unsurprising given my personal interest in breeding.) So I decided to go back to a master few humans have surpassed in brilliance over the millennium, and study what he had to say on the subject. In rendering that subject in the style and with the essence I glean from his drawings, I feel I can (like with the Rock Art drawings), better understand his perspective through the act of recreating his images.

His equine sketches are an amazing blend of the male/female power: rounded voluptuous shapes infused with bulging muscles and fierce expression. His horses training for war have the passion and intensity of any human warrior he portrayed.

Da Vinci recognized the value of such a creature to the man of his culture . . . power driven, war oriented. And the horse appealed to the further enlargement of oneself with their regal, noble demeanor and presence.

The inspiration for this pair of Stallions came out of the unexpected arrival of 2 colts born to my 2 top brood mares (they usually have fillies….)

Stallion Dreams is meant to reflect a vision of the potential power of the two… sires of stout strength, confirmation, and good breeding influencing their line for many generations to come.

In the early light of dawn, I can begin to discern the outline of a new little being lying quietly next to his exhausted mother. Almost always our foals are born in the moments before sunrise when I wake to find a newborn miracle yet again, and the world seems renewed.

“Milagro” is so named because her birth seemed like a miracle.  Born on our ranch this last July, everyone was certain her mother was not pregnant up until an hour before she was born.  I was able to watch the whole birthing and was reminded what a miracle birth is indeed.  As I’ve watched her grow, and her character develop, she shows such a lively personality….curious, brave, delighted with the world.  She has learned to make clear her desires, which is most consistently Mom’s milk, and racing around to stretch those long, gangling legs.  Ranking high on her favorites’ list is getting her rump scratched,   preferring that any nearby human do.  Which points to the name of the sculpture, Milagro's "Sweet Spot" When no one is around to accommodate her, she does her best to take on the job!

"Eclipse"

In this sculpture, the stallion is executing the most extreme movement we ask of horses....the "capriole."
It is taught by the centuries old Spanish Riding School after many years of careful training and building up
the horse's muscle to be physically capable of it. It is the pinnacle of accomplishment, the zenith achievement,
eclipsing all else.

The patina is silver nitrate.... suspended silver particles applied with torch heat, to create the silvery shimmering
effect of the dapples.

The inspiration for this sculpture comes out of a fundraising event we hosted at our ranch for a therapeutic riding program. We brought in a variety of equine models; from cowboys & Indians to Burros & vaqueros’ for artists to paint, draw, sculpt, and photograph. One of the models was a nude seated bareback on one of my mares. For 5 hours the mare stood patiently as the nude model assumed various poses for the working artists. Moonlit is my expression of the unique experience.

The creation of fetishes, effigies, and talismans goes back to the earliest evidence of mankind. The compulsion to make aesthetic objects displays the creative spark that distinguished Homo sapiens form Neanderthals; it is a unique providence of the human mind. First expressed in stone carvings and cave wall paintings from the Paleolithic Period, it has continued throughout the centuries and across all cultures. When mankind is in tune with the natural environment, he is acutely aware of the strengths inherent in other species in order to learn useful survival skills . . . such as the bear for finding healing herbs, the coyote for clever prowess, the deer for evasive tactics. By creating their likeness, the recreation becomes the physical embodiment for the particular characteristic the animal symbolizes for the maker. And, as every creature has it’s unique qualities, so have other elements such as stone, feather and bone, which when added to the fetish increases it’s significance. The object then has become the recipient vessel of the energy given it, spiritual liaison for the bearer, containing the energy. This magic spark can then be called upon when needed, whether it be courage, fortitude, clarity in vision or healing powers. As an extension of this most primal understanding that goes back to the very roots of our being, I feel that all objects of art contain an energy endowed by it’s maker. It is this very mystery I wished to explore in this body of work, and encourage viewers to contemplate. It is partly influenced by those contemporary artists who have reminded me of these mysterious corners of my mind, but mostly by the ancients whose brilliance fascinates and inspires me above all, and on whose shoulders we all stand.

Most of the animal forms painted on cave walls during the Ice Age are believed to be iconographic, with mythological implications.  Once in a while, however, an image will appear that is so powerful it would seem to represent a force of nature, and at the same time is rendered with such personality that it might also be the portrait of an individual.

    I have always had a particular interest in the power of ancient artifacts and what the mysteries are that they show us of our ancestors, and so have been drawn to recreating them in my sculpture.  I find that doing these bring me a deeper understanding of what they can tell us.

   With this body of work, I wanted to expand on the series I began years ago of sculpturally recreating ancient drawings, paintings and petroglyphs.  These works include artifact influences from cultures worldwide and from different periods of time, because they show how pervasive and consistent this practice was from all corners of the globe. 

These animals taken from a variety of historical artifacts, are sculpted to reference their origin, but to have them to appear to be coming alive, animated from the dormant stance they have been in for centuries….answering a kind of summoning.  Hearing the call from the shaman, they are beginning to move.

An enduring appeal of horse imagery is that it can embody both powerful male and female symbolism. The horses depicted on the ceremonial caves of Paleolithic man suggest fertility and abundance, whereas the horse in Renaissance art, once equines were developed into tools for battle, became strongly male.

Once I began to consciously consider the horse as I have rendered it in my own work, I realized that I have mostly focused on the female side . . . (unsurprising given my personal interest in breeding.) So I decided to go back to a master few humans have surpassed in brilliance over the millennium, and study what he had to say on the subject. In rendering that subject in the style and with the essence I glean from his drawings, I feel I can (like with the Rock Art drawings), better understand his perspective through the act of recreating his images.

Leonardo Da Vinci admired the horse’s ability to truly become an extension of man. He has drawn many comparisons of human and equine facial expressions that reflect this. His equine sketches are an amazing blend of the male/female power: rounded voluptuous shapes infused with bulging muscles and fierce expression. His horses training for war have the passion and intensity of any human warrior he portrayed.

Da Vinci recognized the value of such a creature to the man of his culture . . . power driven, war oriented. And the horse appealed to the further enlargement of oneself with their regal, noble demeanor and presence.

In this series I've tried to focus on individual personalities that I believe can be glimpsed best in moments of relaxed repose. Most often humans today experience wildlife at a distance and on the move. Animals, whether domesticated or wild, have a character as individual as humans, and sometimes reflect this character in their facial or body expressions. The capturing of a tell tale gesture or glance is what I find rewarding in these works.
